What does self-preservation actually mean for a cancer caregiver?

In this special two-year anniversary episode of The Cancer Caregiver Podcast, Charlotte reflects on why she chose to build the show around self-preservation rather than self-care and how her understanding of that idea has changed after two years of exploring the realities of cancer caregiving.

Charlotte also reflects on something else the podcast has taught her: caregivers do not always need another solution. Sometimes caregiver support begins with recognition. Hearing someone accurately describe why good news does not bring relief, why making plans has become difficult, why your brain feels overloaded, or why you feel angry when everyone needs something from you can provide language for experiences that previously felt like personal shortcomings. Being seen clearly does not fix caregiving, but it can change the way you understand what is happening to you.

This anniversary episode asks a different question from the familiar “Are caregivers taking care of themselves?” Instead: Is there still room for the caregiver to exist inside the life caregiving has created? Can you still have preferences, make choices, change your mind, want something, or simply be interested in something that has nothing to do with cancer? Charlotte explores why caregiver identity and self-recognition are not extras to address once treatment ends.

In this episode, Charlotte explores:

  • why she chose self-preservation instead of self-care when starting The Cancer Caregiver Podcast
  • how her understanding of caregiver self-preservation has changed over two years
  • the difference between caregiver exhaustion and slowly losing space for your own life
  • how the qualities that make you a capable caregiver can also quietly consume more of your identity
  • why recognition and language can sometimes be more useful than another piece of advice
  • why caregiver support needs to include the person underneath the caregiving role
  • the question she believes matters more than simply asking whether caregivers practice enough self-care
